Vince Battaglia is the principal investigator of the battery fabrication laboratory in the U.S. Department of Energy’s multi-institutional Batteries for Advanced Transportation Technologies Program (BATT), as well as serving as BATT’s program manager for future directions. His expertise in the storage and conversion of electrical energy extends to many other programs at Berkeley Lab, DOE, and auto-industry research groups such as the United States Advanced Battery Consortium (USABC), which is part of the United States Council for Automotive Research (USCAR). 

 

Battaglia joined Berkeley Lab in 2004 after pursuing battery and fuel-cell research at Argonne National Laboratory, where he helped reshape BATT to focus on emerging battery technologies. His 1993 Ph.D. from UC Berkeley was based on a dissertation on electrochemical systems, following a master’s degree in coal gasification technology. His current research concentrates on improving electrodes for high-performance rechargeable batteries for hybrid and full electric vehicles, continuing his long interest in lithium-ion battery systems.
